Gerry McAvoy is a Northern Irish blues-rock bassist best known for his 20-year collaboration with Rory Gallagher, his work with Nine Below Zero, and founding Band of Friends. Born on December 19, 1951, in Belfast, he remains a pillar of European blues rock.
The Rory Gallagher Years (1971–1991)
After Deep Joy disbanded, McAvoy was recruited by legendary Irish blues guitarist Rory Gallagher in 1971. He performed on every one of Gallagher’s solo albums and toured globally for two decades, holding down the rhythm section.
Post-Gallagher and Band of Friends
Following Gallagher’s death in the 1990s, McAvoy joined the British R&B band Nine Below Zero, playing with them until 2011. In 2012, he formed Gerry McAvoy’s Band of Friends, a group dedicated to celebrating Rory Gallagher’s musical legacy.
Gerry will be our guest on the Isle of Arran where he will be playing both Saturday and Sunday with Friends Dave Cantwell on keys, Andy Taylor guitar and Kyle Hood guitar from Rigid Soul. An incredible mix of talent.
